Meet our 2018 Summer Interns!

Meet our 2018 Summer Interns

1. What’s your name?
My name is Alora Stickley.

2. Where are you from?
I was born in Southern California, but I have been living in Nevada for 6 years now.

3. What are you studying and what do you want to be when you grow up?
I am studying Biology with a focus in ecology and evolution. I’m still deciding what I want to be, but I have been considering a job in nature conservation or botany.

4. What’s a quirky fun fact most people don’t know about you?
I generally won’t add sauces to my food. This applies mostly to American food for me, I never eat ketchup (because I don’t like the taste) and I wont use dipping sauces for chicken nuggets or wings. I just prefer to have most things plain which is something that usually shocks people.

5. Why did you choose Clean the World Asia?
Since I am considering going into nature conservation I thought that interning at CTWA would give me an idea of what that would be like. I was also inspired by CTWs mission statement and I was excited to have the opportunity to help people.

6. What’s your role whilst working at CTWA?
There were a lot of events planned in June and July. So, I helped with creating comprehensive checklists for these events and attending them. Other than that, I helped to keep the office organized and I wrote a blog for the Clean the World Asia website.

7. What’s been your favorite experience working with CTWA so far?
My favorite experience was the Saturday Fun Festival for the Endless Possibilities Photo Exhibition. Because the event took place on the weekend and only lasted a few hours more families attended. It was so much fun to see these families enjoy the exhibition and it gave me the opportunity to meet some amazing people.

8. What’s the weirdest thing you’ve seen or eaten in HK?
The weirdest thing I seen are intestines, its not something I really see in the U.S., so it was a foreign concept to eat them. I tried them in congee and while the taste was good it was hard for me to adjust to the texture.

9. What’s your favourite quote?                                                                               “What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.” – Jane Goodall

10. What has been your biggest lesson from your intern experience at CTWA?
The availability and use of soap can make a big difference for people all over the world. I think I usually take for granted my access to soap. Although I use it its just a habit I don’t think much about but learning that the use of soap can save the lives of so many people, young children included, I have a greater respect for and awareness of the importance of handwashing.

11. What is your favorite thing about Hong Kong?
It’s hard to choose just one thing, but I would have to say the food. I wanted to make sure to try as much as I could even if I wasn’t sure if I’d like it. To my surprise, I liked most of what I ate, and I have some new favorite foods.
